You've likely heard of microneedling by this time. And just from the name, it sounds like it will hurt. What if we tell you that it will boost your skincare's efficacy and that you can even do microneedling at home?
Here are some things you should know about microneedling.
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure where you or an aesthetician uses a device that contains ultra-fine needles to make tiny punctures on the skin. It might sound scary, but it's not when a professional does it. Why? Because it's about creating a controlled skin injury. According to dermatologists, the "injury" caused by microneedling stimulates collagen growth, which then helps with healing scars and reducing wrinkles.
Meanwhile, microneedling at home is a less invasive process. You can use a tool like a derma roller or a derma-stamp to create 'microchannels' on your skin. These tools have tinier needles compared to the ones used in a clinic. For microneedling at home, the purpose is to help the actives in your skincare products penetrate deeper into your skin for better results. In other words, it's about ensuring that your skincare is as effective as possible.
If you want to slow down skin aging or boost your skin's glow, you are more likely to benefit from microneedling. However, those with acne or rosacea should avoid microneedling at home or professionally. Doing it might only spread bacteria around or only worsen the inflammation.
Using the right equipment is also crucial. Ensure that you are using a device meant for home use, with the needles on the roller or stamp no longer than 0.25mm. Make sure to follow the instructions because doing so means that microneedling will never hurt you or draw blood.
Prepping is just as important when you're doing microneedling at home. Make sure that you disinfect your device before using it and that you clean your face. Next, apply a serum of your choice, then apply the derma-roller or stamp with gentle and even pressure. Use it in an asterisk motion: go up and down, then diagonally left up to the right, then right up to the left. After doing that, massage any leftover serum into your skin. And avoid putting on makeup for 24 hours if possible. Ideally, microneedling at home should be done before bed. That way, the active ingredients can penetrate the skin while you sleep.
Another thing to note is that you should not overdo it. More is not best in this case unless you want to end up with inflammation. So best to stick to doing it no more than twice a week.
If you're already using good skincare products, then microneedling is one of the best ways to get the most out of them. You can get rid of fine lines, boost your hydration levels or improve your skin tone. Not only that, you can get a serious boost in glow.
